Okuti - Day 3 AM (Leopard Special)

Back to camp to collect our belongings and say our goodbyes (ie hand over tips!) except as soon as we got there, Jonah was told that a leopard had been sighted not far from camp and would we like to try and spot her.

You bet we would; we quickly dashed back to our tent, threw the last of our belongings into our bags and rushed back to the truck.  The track outside camp is very sandy with quite deep ruts and, I should imagine, quite difficult to drive, so progress was slow but we got to the spot eventually and there, high up in a tree not dissimilar to the empty tree I photographed yesterday and close to an area where Jonah thought he'd spotted a leopard in long grass yesterday (I didn't mention it in the blog as despite driving up and down for ages we never found it and we weren't entirely convinced he'd actually spotted anything in the first place - cynics that we are!) was this beautiful female leopard.

Sadly she wasn't draped languorously over a rotting branch a mere 6ft off the ground in perfect light and no background distractions as I would have liked, but I've learnt to accept what nature offers me and as a bonus there was only a couple of other trucks around which both left after about 5 minutes and we had her to ourselves.

Jonah was really good, we kept checking with him how much longer we could stay watching her given that we had a plane to catch and he kept saying "another 5 mins" probably 4 times.  We'd been watching her for a while when she began to yawn and stretch which is often a precursor to moving and, if we were really lucky, descending from her eyrie.

Eventually she started to come down but I wasn't in a good position for clear shots so hopefully Ian did better with video.

WOW, weren't we lucky to see her and a bit like when we saw the cheetahs on our last day in Kenya, it was all the more special as it was just her and us.

And with that we dashed off to the airstrip about 20 mins away to catch our little plane for the 5 minute flight to the next camp.
